Airbus Plane Types and Models Guide


“We make it fly.” The slogan of Airbus is a fantastic summation of their business. Airbus now holds a portion of the commercial airliner industry duopoly.

Their planes provide a wide range of options for all types of airlines, with aircraft of various shapes and sizes. Airbus is now more than simply a commercial aircraft manufacturer; it is also a defense and space enterprise.

Their history dates back to the A300, their first aircraft. The 1969 program served as the cornerstone for Airbus.

Starting as a German and French venture, it grew into a firm controlled by France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. When founded, the goal was to compete with long-established American firms.

Their first aircraft, the A300, entered the Air France fleet service in 1974. Because of the market domination of US corporations, they did not have any US customers until 1978.

On the other hand, Airbus entered the US market with Easter Airlines in 78. The A310 and, later, the A320 entered service in the 1980s, and the A320 Family remains the company’s best-selling aircraft family today.

Airbus has built commercial, military, passenger, and cargo aircraft since its foundation. They also manufacture helicopters under the name Airbus Helicopters and are a shareholder in the European rocket firm Ariane.

Airbus Defence and Space, on the other side, is the company’s division that produces the well-known Eurofighter Tayfoon and A400M.

This Airbus plane types and models article will concentrate on Airbus civilian airliners.

Narrow Body: Airbus A220 Family

Airbus A220 Family

The smallest and youngest aircraft in the fleet, the Airbus A220 Family, was initially known as the Bombardier C-Series. The CSeries was introduced in 2008 to bridge the gap between prior Bombardier aircraft and those made by Airbus and Boeing.

As a result of the acquisition, the CS100 was renamed the A220-100, while the bigger CS300 was renamed the A220-300. The Canadian-designed aircraft combines cutting-edge aerodynamics, innovative materials, and engines of the newest generation.


The A220 is a narrow-body single-aisle airliner that intends to bridge the gap between big single-aisle and regional aircraft. The aircraft’s interior is designed to provide a sense of spaciousness for a relaxing experience.

The extra-large windows provide ideal viewing with multiple sets in each row. The A220 employs modern materials, such as composites in the wings, empennage, and rear fuselage, which saves weight and improves efficiency.

Seating figures might help you better understand what the A220 family is going towards. ATR, a regional aircraft producer, manufactures the ATR72-600, which has a seating capacity of 78 people.

The Airbus A320, on the other hand, typically carries 140 to 170 passengers. As a result, the A220 fits ideally between regional and single-aisle aircraft. ATR, by the way, is also owned in part by Airbus. Remember how I mentioned Airbus manufactures airplanes of all sizes?

With one of the widest economy seats, 25% reduced fuel consumption and CO2 benefits, and revolutionary turbofan engines, the Airbus A220 has already manufactured over 200 units. I mean genuinely revolutionary, and we’ll get back to engines later. The largest operators are Delta Airlines, airBaltic, Swiss Airlines, and Air Canada.

Specifications and Performance

Aerodynamic design and specially developed engines reduce both fuel consumption and noise levels. Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW1500G engines power the aircraft.

The maximum operational speed for the Airbus A220 is M0.82 (547 knots). The plane has a range of 3450 nautical miles, making it comparable to the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 in range.

Pratt &Whitney GTF Engines

The engines are, without a doubt, one of the fascinating aspects of the A220. The gearbox attached to the fan is what makes this engine so unique.

The geared turbofan design allows the fan to turn at a different speed than the turbine by inserting gear between the fan and the low-pressure shaft.

According to Pratt & Whitney, this translates to lower noise, NOx, and CO2 emissions. Naturally, I’ve previously stated the increased efficiency and decreased fuel usage.

The A220’s engines, when combined with the innovative materials employed, set it apart from its competitors. Airliners now prioritize highly efficient, flexible single-aisle aircraft over big birds.

Airbus A320 Family

Airbus A320 Family

Members of the Airbus A320 Family are the company’s best-selling aircraft. The A320 was initially introduced in 1984, with the A319 having a shorter fuselage and the A321 having a longer fuselage.

There was a type A318 that was even shorter, but it is no longer produced.

However, the business continues producing three more models with NEO (New Engine Option) variations. Later, in response to market demand for longer-range single-aisle aircraft, Airbus made two extended-range versions: the A321 LR (Long Range) and the A321 XLR (Xtra Long Range). 

Airbus has now produced over 10,000 A320 Family aircraft. Despite being 17 years younger than its opponent, the Airbus A320 is already quite close to the Boeing 737 in manufacturing numbers.

The A320 was created using fly-by-wire technology, an innovative move in the Airbus safety culture. Pilots could fly the A320 as usual, but the flight envelope protection stopped the plane from making moves outside its performance limits.


The A320neo Family has a wide range of configuration options, from 120 to 244 seats and up to 4700 nm with the A321XLR. A320 family reflects an eagerness to adopt every kind of market demand. 

A short-to-medium-haul aircraft family, in my opinion, is the most successful family of commercial aircraft family ever. Especially after the 737 Max, it is not hard to guess it will soon get the best-selling seat.

With the biggest single-aisle cabin in its class, Airbus is attempting to convey a wide-body impression within the cabin.

As the current trend in aviation moves toward more efficiency and higher ranges, firms are also trying to mitigate the negative consequences of lengthier trips. The Airbus A320 Family aims toward the same goal with greater interior comfort.

Except for the new engines, Airbus is also using new wingtip designs passing from triangular wingtips. Airbus continues to market contemporary and traditional engine options for family members.

Specifications and Performance

The specifications of the A320 and A321 are shown below the table. You can see that the A320 has an extra 35 passengers on average because of the 7-meter length difference.

We also saw a better range of 7400 km (A321LR) instead of 6300 km when we installed the additional fuel tanks.

Given that the A321 XLR will have a range of 8700 km (4700 nm), we can predict that it will find peace in the market. It is a single-aisle airplane with a small wide-body capacity and range that is very efficient.

NEO version aims to make maximum impact with little changes, which has a reason. This way, existing operators of the A320 can quickly adapt to the NEO version with no significant maintenance changes and extra pilot training. 

There are two engine options CFM LEAP-1A and PW1100G-JM. The leap engine is based on CFM56, a proven successful engine for narrow bodies. PW1100G, on the other hand, has the new gearbox technology I explained earlier.

Widebody: Airbus A300

Airbus A300

A300 is the plane that initiated the Airbus story. The world’s first twin-engine wide-body aircraft flew for the first time in 1972. Three-engine planes were commonplace back then. A300 had a difficult phase in the beginning when it could not market.

The US market, in particular, was a significant issue, and Eastern Airlines changed this issue by acquiring 19 A300s. With time, the cost-effective and dependable A300 established its mark and paved the way for future Airbus aircraft.

The Boeing L-1011 TriStar, which had three engines at the time, was the A300’s primary opponent.


Airbus A300-600, a later version, had a typical seating arrangement between 210 and 250. With two engines, the aircraft could fly non-stop for 4,000 km.

A variant A300-600R entered commercial service in 1988, bringing increased range for the twin-engine jetliner from the fuel trim tank located in its tail.

Airbus A300 is still in operation as a cargo plane for some companies. Along with serving as a passenger and cargo airplane, Airbus A300 also served as a tool to train astronauts. Zero-G aircraft created a 0G environment following a unique parabolic flight path. 

Airbus A310

Airbus A310

Airbus A310 is a mid-range wide-body airliner with the same engines as the longer-range A300-600. Two hundred fifty-five aircraft have been produced since they first took the skies in 1982. Airbus A330 replaced A310 with similar passenger capacity with a more extended range. 


Airbus A310 is a wide-body, low-wing passenger aircraft. The composite vertical stabilizer of the plane was one of the first built with carbon-fiber materials, and it is another milestone proving the always innovative mindset of Airbus.

The wide-body aircraft’s cabin is designed to give as much space to passengers. The seating arrangements were very flexible to provide airlines with more options.

When it first entered to market in the 200-seat category, it was offering maximum flexibility for operators by flying short, medium, or extended routes with high reliability. 

Along with serving as passenger aircraft, A310 served as a cargo aircraft and is still active in some companies. A military version of the aircraft Airbus A310MRTT (Multi-Role Tanker Transport) was developed for air-to-air refueling or in-flight refueling tanker transport aircraft. 

Specifications and Performance

It can carry up to 230 passengers (Pax Max:280) in a typical three-class arrangement, with a range of up to 5,200 nautical miles, on the innovative A310.

In addition to reducing fuel consumption and emissions, the A310’s two engine choices, General Electric’s CF6-80C2, and the PW4000 from Pratt & Whitney, cut noise and CO2.

Airbus A330 Family

Airbus A330 Family

The Airbus A330 is a low-cost wide-body aircraft. In my opinion, the market position it has makes it perfect for airlines. The A330 family is a bridge between the A320 and the A350 series.

Suppose an airline flies an A321 between two locations and may supplement that service with an A330 to meet increased demand during the high-demand months.

However, because it has a wide body and a long-range, airlines may pair it with the A350 and utilize it this time for regional and smaller long-haul trips. In other words, Airbus allows airlines to serve the whole market across various seating and range options.

The A330 Family’s versatility has made it a popular choice for more than 120 airlines. Using the NEO option, it is also able to preserve its position. The Airbus A330 is also the base of Airbus BelugaXL planes.

The Neo version has given the A330-800 and A330-900 two more family choices. Airbus modified some aspects of the aircraft’s original design as part of the neo option and the new engine selection.

These improvements resulted in a 25% reduction in fuel consumption per passenger seat compared to the competitors from the previous generation. The A330 neo variation of the family has 25% lower airframe maintenance costs than the CEO version.

The wings have been extended and now feature a higher aspect ratio, and sharklets inspired by the A350 also had more powerful engines with a higher bypass ratio.

Other A350 technologies, including the Skywise connected system and advanced materials, are included in the next generation of A330 aircraft.

Another element that distinguishes the A330 from the A320 is its resemblance to the A320. Flight crews might be quickly transferred from an A320 to an A330.

Airlines gain another advantage when you consider the short time necessary for technician training and the uniformity of spare parts and tools across aircraft.

To recapitulate, the A330 Family of aircraft is incredibly adaptable, operating in the A320-A350 range.

It is highly dependable, environmentally responsible, and economically sound thanks to reduced emissions, lower fuel consumption, and fewer maintenance requirements than other aircraft on the market.

It’s no surprise that the A330 is so popular, given how little training is required to transition from an A320 to an A330 and the advanced A350 technology employed.

The GE CF6-80E, Pratt & Whitney PW4000, and Rolls-Royce Trent 700 are available for the Airbus A330 CEO. NEO option led to the development of Trent 7000 engines, and the new engine is quieter and uses less fuel.

Another variant of the A330 is a multi-role tanker. Based on the A330-200. The A330 MRTT has a large capacity to carry 111 tonnes of fuel. It can deliver 50,000 kg of fuel to various receivers throughout a four-hour loitering mission at a distance of more than 1,000 nm from its launch site.

The A330 MRTT supports Boom System and Under-Wing Pods for air-to-air refueling. It may also be utilized as a MedEvac aircraft or as a military transport aircraft for people.

Airbus A340 Family

Following the A300, the wide-body, long-distance Airbus A340 was launched. The aircraft, which was developed at the same time as the Airbus A330, had its first flight in 1991.

It was a perfect match for the airlines when it was first introduced because of the ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operations Performance Standards).

Before the early 2000s, ETOPS regulations prevented twin-engine planes from flying very far, particularly over the Pacific. The four engines of the Airbus A340 gave it superior range and capacity, making it an excellent option for lengthy wide-body flights.

New ETOPS rules, however, caused the Airbus A340’s popularity to decline. Two-engine Boeing 777 aircraft could carry the same number of people while consuming less fuel.

There were four different A340 types produced: the A340-200, A340-300, A340-500, and A340-600. While A340-600 had the most capacity, A340-500 had the most extended range.


The Airbus A340 is an elegant airplane. A total of four distinct fuselage lengths were available, each powered by a set of four engines. Because it was designed in conjunction with the A330, it shares a similar fuselage and wing. As a result, flying these two airplanes together is a lot simpler.

The A340 has the same inventive spirit as previous Airbus aircraft. The package includes fly-by-wire controls, lightweight carbon fiber, and fuel-saving aerodynamics. Because of its size, the A340 could carry a lot of cargo.

Specifications and Performance

The Airbus A340’s four variations with varied sizes let it hold between 250 and 475 people, allowing it to fly for up to 9,000 nautical miles.

The A340-600 model could carry 475 people, while the A340-500 could fly 9,000 nautical miles (17,000 km), making it the longest-range aircraft for a long time. The Airbus A350ULR, which has a range of 9,700 nautical miles, currently holds this honor.

Airbus A350 Family

It was launched in 2015, becoming the A350 Airbus’s youngest model. It is an entirely new design incorporating the most advanced aviation technology, from the wings to the cabin comfort and the engines to the cockpit.

The A350-900 and A350-1000 are the only two models in the A350 family. The A350-900 is also available in a variant called the A350ULR, primarily marketed to Singapore Airlines and the longest-range passenger aircraft currently in service.

The Airbus A350 was initially designed to compete with Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner aircraft. On the other hand, Airbus decided to construct a larger plane in response to low demand for the A350-800 and the revised A330neo.

Airbus A350 is presently competing against the considerably older Boeing 777.


Short to ultra-long-range flights are possible on the Airbus A350, a large wide-body. The aircraft’s ability to fly long distances makes it a popular choice for long-distance carriers.

The aircraft has an entirely new design from the ground up, making it highly contemporary and efficient. The advanced aerodynamics of the A350 allows for a smooth and efficient flight.

Composites, titanium, and modern aluminum alloys make up more than 70 percent of the aircraft’s airframe, making it lighter and more cost-effective.

As with the rest of Airbus’s aircraft, the A350 exemplifies the company’s commitment to innovation. The aircraft’s morphing wings can change form while in flight in response to changing flying circumstances.

The redesigned winglet design makes these wings much more efficient and performs better than the previous model.

Along with taking the aircraft’s overall economics into account, Airbus devoted close attention to the comfort of the cabin and cockpit. The Airbus A350 cockpit takes the lessons learned from the A380 and extends them to a new level.

There are six LCD panels in the A350’s cockpit to display all the flying systems and information required. One of the company’s top focuses is connecting the aircraft to digital systems.

As far as cabin comfort is concerned, Airbus goes above and beyond to make long flights as pleasant as possible for its customers. The cabin’s ambient lighting and wide windows command attention.

Specifications and Performance

The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 turbofans power the A350-100, making it one of the world’s most energy-efficient large airplanes. Three-spool turbofan engine design in XWB engines enhances engine efficiency significantly.

Airbus A380

Since its maiden flight in 2005, the Airbus A380 has enthralled aviation fans worldwide. Airbus A380 was a challenge to Boeing and a significant milestone for Airbus. Many of the innovations brought by the A380 are already being employed in other Airbus aircraft.

This large four-engine double-deck aircraft has a maximum capacity of 853 people. A remarkable accomplishment of aeronautical engineering has been achieved with A380, and the A380 had 251 orders.

Unfortunately, because of high operating costs and developments in big twin-engine planes, Airbus could not sell more aircraft and ceased manufacturing. The Airbus A380’s production ceased in 2021, but the aircraft will continue to fly for years.


The A380 is head and shoulders above the competition in size and weight. Airlines could use the double-decker cabin design to provide both low-cost and high-end seating options.

The A380’s cabin allows for a conventional 4-class arrangement of 545 seats to be accommodated without sacrificing comfort. Compared to the Boeing 747, it outperformed every metric, from cargo capacity to takeoff and landing speed.

Airbus A380 employed advanced technology to earn its title. Airbus used lighter materials and innovative flight control structures to reduce the aircraft’s weight.

Two hydraulic and two electric systems have replaced the three hydraulic circuits of the A380 to save weight, enhance system redundancy, and increase safety.

The primary instrument panel of the A380 features eight interchangeable liquid crystal display modules that are all the same size and shape.

In addition to the primary flight display, the LCD units have a navigation display, two multi-function displays with cursor control provided by a trackball, an engine warning display, and a system monitor.

The Airbus A380 used fly-by-wire, and it is astonishing to be able to operate this massive plane with only a side stick.

The Rolls-Royce Trent 900 and the Engine Alliance (General Electrics+Pratt&Whitney) GP 7200 have been the two engine alternatives for the Airbus A380.

Airbus Beluga


The logistical backbone of Airbus airplane manufacturing is Airbus Beluga. A cargo plane was required to transport the parts between the company’s many production facilities in the UK, Germany, France, and Spain, as well as other subcontractors from other nations.

Till the introduction of the A330-based Airbus BelugaXL, the A300-based Airbus BelugaST has been doing the job for almost two decades. Beluga flies to a total of eleven different cities across Europe.

The lovely whale artwork on the beluga has always been one of my favorite things to view, and I want to see it more often.


To counterbalance the effect of the large fuselage, the BelugaXL is simply an A330 modified with a lower cockpit, an enormous cargo compartment, and a redesigned tail.

The BelugaXL is 30 percent larger than its BelugaST predecessor, measuring seven meters longer and one meter broader.

Cargo loading systems on the BelugaXLs, like on the BelugaSTs, are operated by ATI-trained (Airbus Transport International) employees to make loading and unloading of products as easy and efficient as feasible.

Airbus A400M

Four turboprop engines power the Airbus A400M Atlas military cargo plane. For seven European nations, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, the A400M project was initiated in May 2003.

The first A400M took to the skies in 2009, and currently, there are 108 of them in service.

Design and Specs

The A400 M’s enormous cargo compartment may carry critical military equipment. Equipment such as a heavy helicopter or an infantry combat vehicle no longer fits earlier generations of tactical airlifters.

The A400M can transport a wide range of enormous cargo, including vehicles and helicopters that are too large or heavy for previous generation tactical airlifters. It has a maximum cargo capacity of 37 tonnes (81,600 pounds) and a volume of 340 m3 (12,000 ft3).

It may also transport large lifting equipment for disaster relief, such as excavators or mobile cranes, a rescue boat, a heavy logistic truck, and other supplies.

ATR Aircraft

ATR Aircraft

Airbus and Leonardo have partnered to form ATR, and it’s a regional plane manufacturer. When you consider Airbus’ joint venture with ATR, you can see how the company is involved in constructing aircraft of all sizes and purposes.

ATR 42-600

The smallest member of the group is the ATR 42-600. It also has an additional variation called the ATR 42-600 STOL. 30 to 50 people may fit on an ATR42-600, depending on the layout.

It can take off from 1000-meter runways because it is intended to be an affordable regional aircraft. On the other side, under some circumstances, STOL versions can take off from 800-meter runways.

The maximum cruising speed of the ATR 42-600, powered by PW127XT turboprop engines, is 535 km/h. The passenger aircraft’s range is 1345 kilometers (726 nm).

ATR 72-600

ATR 72-600 planes are ubiquitous among regional carriers, and it has several cabin arrangements that may accommodate 44 to 78 passengers. The ATR 72-600 has a high asset value because of its broad appeal and versatility, making it a popular airline choice.

The maximum cruising speed of the ATR 72-600, powered by PW127XT turboprop engines, is 500 km/h. The ATR-600 range is 1370 kilometers (740 nm).
